The way we parent our children is based on yesterday’s cultural perceptions, on the ownership-model of ‘having’ children, on our own narrow agendas, and on what we and our culture arbitrarily think is best. We do not really respect our children or their own personal path, and at school we suppress their intuition and their instincts as worthless, while programming their minds with yesterday’s beliefs that cannot possibly bring out their full potential. School also introduces kids to a distorted and disjointed version of reality, where there is no adventure, no self-determination, no insight, no motivation and no freedom, while kids are trained to sit still and obey and copy. Schools promote a 2-sense learning, where only hearing and looking are used at all, and poorly at that! Only a 6-sense learning, and learning through the body, can develop the child’s full potential.
Travel offers an effective alternative to educational boredom and allows kids to learn under their own steam, in their own way, so they are always motivated to reach for their true potential, while living a real-life adventure! The senses of touch, taste, smell, and intuition are used for learning, and it is not only the brain but the entire body that is used!
‘Travel-parenting’ offers globetrotter tips and psychological insights based on a life-time of shoestring-travel and on raising two daughters in culturally diverse situations and within tribal societies. It gives insights into the effects of the consumer-world and its soulless technology on children; it questions our modern concepts for parenting and points at a severe lack of mind-development in our kids by comparing the growing incompetence of Western kids with ideal conditions and with tribal children who determine their own learning.
Apart from giving medical and practical advice, this book offers a look at the shortcomings of Western societies and suggests an entirely novel approach to raising children, based on values and attitudes that need to be cultivated and that are today systematically ignored. Teenage-problems are explained as not purely hormonal or unpredictable, but as mostly cultural, and widely caused by parents and society and the way we rule our children!
For a child to learn not only accepted facts, but to think for herself and to be emotionally and spiritually competent, more is needed than conceptual programming! A child needs to feel freedom to know it, feel respect to give it, and feel personally responsible to walk her own path!
Children could be so much more than mere receivers of our redundant, non-working ideas, and more than obese, desk-warming copy-cats! They need to learn from real life, in real ways, not just repeat what they are told by their culture!
When fully under their own steam as travelers, children can become heroes! They can invent their own action movie and their own fairy-tale, and experience themselves as valuable and competent members of various groups - rather than as purely obedient! Parent and child become a team where everybody learns, not just the child!
‘Travel-parenting’ takes a hard look at modern society and the parenting of our time, while pointing at age-old working solutions. It challenges parents to look in the mirror, to grow up, and to take responsibility. While it draws mostly from a solo-dad’s experience in raising two daughters, it ends with the story of finding a long-lost son and guiding him on a path of initiation into manhood, where the key is again respect, and the door to be opened – freedom!

On the 19th of December 2020 around 1:30pm Rafiki was hit by a slow moving vehicle outside the high voltage surf shop in central Kerikeri. There is a… View moreOn the 19th of December 2020 around 1:30pm Rafiki was hit by a slow moving vehicle outside the high voltage surf shop in central Kerikeri. He then bolted towards Bunnings car park where Nathan lost sight of him. A man pointed that Rafiki had run down Fairway Drive towards Golf View Road. There is a huge amount of gum trees where Rafiki may have hidden away. So Nathan has searched many days and nights..walking all the tracks.
Rafiki is dark brown of medium size. He has a white spotted chest and white spotted front paws and a white tip on his tail. He was wearing a blue collar with name tag.
They did put up a $1000 reward in the hopes that if someone had him he would be returned. This has not happened. There was a thought to be a sighting of Rafiki at the Homestead pub car park around a week after he went missing. And also a thought to be on the 11th of Feb at 10pm on Waipapa road.
Nathan lives in Waipapa so Rafiki could be trying to find his way home.

My colleague Jo is writing a story about buying by tender, specifically, the new trend of writing letters to the vendor to explain why they should pick your offer over all the rest.
As the market gets harder and harder to break into, we've been hearing more and more about people trying to make a personal connection with vendors to give their tender offers the edge. We've heard folks will include personal details about their family, why the love the house and what their plans for the property are.
Jo would love to talk to anyone who's written a letter like this to accompany a tender - perhaps it's you, perhaps a relative or friend - or from vendors who've received letters like this, accompanying a tender.

People near coast from BAY OF ISLANDS to WHANGAREI including GREAT BARRIER ISLAND and from MATATA to TOLAGA BAY must MOVE IMMEDIATELY to nearest high ground, out of all tsunami … View moreA Tsunami Warning has been issued following the M8.0 earthquake north-east of New Zealand near KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION.
People near coast from BAY OF ISLANDS to WHANGAREI including GREAT BARRIER ISLAND and from MATATA to TOLAGA BAY must MOVE IMMEDIATELY to nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible. Evacuate these areas even if you did not feel the earthquake. DO NOT WAIT. A damaging tsunami is possible.
People in all other areas who felt a LONG or STRONG earthquake should MOVE IMMEDIATELY to the nearest high ground, out of tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible.
This evacuation advice overrides the current COVID-19 Alert Level requirements. Do not stay at home. MOVE IMMEDIATELY. Stay 2 metres away from others if you can and if it is safe to do so.
People evacuating should walk, run or cycle if possible to reduce chance of getting stuck in traffic. Do not return until all-clear is given by Civil Defence.

The tsunami threat to New Zealand has been further downgraded.
In a statement, Civil Defence announced that while there is no longer a tsunami threat to coastal areas, there are still areas under a beach and marine threat.
These include:
- The North Cape from Ahipara to the Bay of Islands
- Cape Runaway to Tolaga Bay
- Great Barrier Island
- The Chatham Islands

The latest from Civil Defence:
"GNS Science has advised that the largest waves have now passed, and therefore the threat level is now downgraded to a Beach and Marine threat for all areas which were previously under Land and Marine threat.
All people who evacuated can now return.
The advice remains, for all areas under Beach and Marine threat, to stay off beach and shore areas."

Minister for Civil Defence Kiri Allan is giving an update to media at the Beehive. She is joined by Civil Defence Controller Roger Ball and GNS's scientist Bill Fry.
What you need to know:
- Allan thanked all people for following all the relevant advice from authorities.
- Those that have moved inland or to higher ground, must stay there until the official 'all clear' is given.
- The National Crisis Management Agency has been activated.

Flooding of land areas is expected in the following areas:
The West Coast of the North Island from Cape Reinga to Ahipara.
The East Coast of the North Island from Cape Reinga to Whangarei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay including Whakatane and Opotiki.
And Great Barrier Island.

The Pacific Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre say the first waves could reach the top of the North Island by 10.20am.

A magnitude 8.1 earthquake has struck off the coast of the Kermadec Islands.
What you need to know:
Civil Defence has issued a warning to all people near the coast in the following areas:
- The East Coast of the North Island from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei
- Matata to Tolaga Bay including Whakatane and Opotiki
- Great Barrier Island
Civil Defence says residents must move to the nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible.
The earthquake may not have been felt in some of these areas, but evacuation should be immediate as a damaging tsunami is possible.
Any direction given by Civil Defence officials overrides the current alert level rules and restrictions. Try to keep a physical distance of 2 metres from others.
