Poll: Is it time to raise New Zealand's superannuation age?

Stacey Reporter from Stuff

Outgoing Retirement Commissioner Diane Maxwell has been outspoken about the need to increase the pension age from 65.

"You used to get super for five years, then 10 and now 20 - soon it'll be 30. I'm not sure how we can fund people getting super for 30 years or more."

New Zealand has one of the simplest pension schemes in the world - all you have to do is be old enough and have lived in the country long enough and you can get it.

But that also makes it expensive - about $14.5 billion this year. Jobseeker benefits, by comparison, cost just $1.7b and sole parent support $1.08b.

Invercargill police are appealing for information following the fire at Waihopai School on Saturday morning.

Police and Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) were called to the primary school, on Herbert St, about 2.50am.

The alarm system and the quick response from firefighters meant there was only minor damage and no reported injuries, a police spokeswoman said. The fire is being treated as deliberate and an investigation was under way.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area around the time of the fire or who had information on the incident is asked to contact police on 03 2110400 or give information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Hi neighbours,

Make someone feel special and give a shout out to your favourite local business!

Maybe it's your local cafe with the barista who always makes your flat white the way you like it, the hairdresser who consistently styles your hair perfectly, the dairy owner who makes popping in for some milk that little bit better or even the pet shop staff who know your fur baby just as well as you do.

Your kind words could have the chance to appear on the front of Southland Times.
