Hi Neighbours!

Have you heard about our Community Connects grants?

The grants help fund projects that promote the inclusion and contribution of older people in community life, and support communities to prepare for an ageing population.

The fund makes one-off grants of up to $15,000. The grants are open to any New Zealand council, community organisation, or registered non-profit organisation. Applications for our current funding round close on 9 October.

Our last funding round was a huge success and helped fund a range of different projects across the country, that had focuses like reducing loneliness and social isolation of older people, developing an age-friendly community plan and supporting people with dementia.

With the right planning and support, we can create environments where older people are valued, connected and able to participate in their community.

If you have an age-friendly project you are interested in getting funding for click here bit.ly...

Is this your cat????

Claire from Mayfair

Does anyone in the Charlotte Cres/ Caroline Rd area recognise this cat? It has been attacking our cats badly and has now decided it will venture into our house at night via cat door. We were woken in the early hrs to a terrified child as the cat was in her room growling.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is asking Hawke’s Bay residents to hold off lighting fires and to check any historic burn sites are completely out with high winds expected over the weekend.
"Please don’t light fires when strong winds are forecast," says Fire and Emergency Principal Rural Fire Officer Trevor Mitchell.
"The winds can cause a fire to more easily spread and get out of control."

"Anyone who has lit a fire should also double check it is fully extinguished so the winds don’t reignite it," Trevor Mitchell says.

"Dig right down into the site, open it up and put some water on it to make sure it is absolutely out."

Trevor Mitchell says people need to be extra careful as we go into a windy period of the year, especially with unusually dry weather.

"We’ve had half the usual rainfall we’d expect over winter in the Hawke’s Bay and there’s still a lot of dry materials around from last summer - meaning there is more fuel for a fire to burn," he says.

"Check the weather forecasts and take the necessary precautions to prevent a fire getting out of control."

"If you need any advice, get in touch with the Hawke's Bay Area Office on 06 835 2114 or go to www.checkitsalright.nz.... You can find information on that website about how to reduce the risk of fire."

"If you're concerned about a fire, call 111."

I've been in media, one way or another, most of my life. I owned and edited The Havelock North Village Press in the nineties etc.
I've been subscribing at around $12 a week to Hawkes Bay Today but am considering cancelling as most of the stories are Hawkes Bay Yesterday!!. Is it just me or is the paper just full of " he said, she said" gossip and items about neighbours fighting or kids having their bikes pinched. Most of the other stories are beat-ups from their parent company NZME in Auck. or are items well and truly covered online by Stuff or various other social media outlets.
Anyone else agree that it's time to cancel or should I persevere?
