Fireworks are a ton of fun but carry real risks that need to be taken seriously. If you plan on lighting some here's some tips to keep everyone in your community safe and happy.

โŒ 1. Never light fireworks in dry or windy conditions.

๐Ÿ”ฅ 2. Only use fireworks in wide open areas, away from flammable items such as trees, grasses, gas tanks, and wood.

๐Ÿ’ฆ 3. Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.

๐Ÿ‘ง 4. Children should never light fireworks themselves and need to be supervised closely at all times.

๐Ÿงฐ 5. Keep all unlit fireworks in a secure bag or container away from any source of fire until they are ready to be used.

๐Ÿ“ž 6. Be considerate and let neighbours know if you're planning to set off fireworks. Aim to finish at a reasonable time.

๐Ÿฑ 7. Keep pets comfortable and secure inside. The loud booms and flashing lights can easily scare them off.

๐Ÿฎ 8. Avoid lighting off fireworks around farm animals and be aware of any newborns or elderly neighbours who may also be affected. If possible, change locations to somewhere that minimises any disturbances.

๐ŸŒฟ 9. Be a tidy Kiwi and let's work together to keep New Zealand beautiful! Clean up any any rubbish and leave your spot better than you found it.

Extracts from an article by Brenda Lockie-Julian, Registered Nurse; Vorotek Product Specialist; Ear Nurse Clinician Trainer; RN BA MBA.

"Growing interest in Ear Microsuction over the last few years has been driven in part, by client demand as well as Practitioners wanting to adopt an alternative, safer practice than Ear Syringing.

As there is an ever-increasing problem with Syringing complications, Manual Wax Removal not involving liquid has fewer risks and is now becoming more widely practiced. A combination of procedures can be used - cerumenolytic agents, ear curettage and ear microsuction.

Microsuction is generally well tolerated and considered to be a safer and more effective option than syringing. Carried out under direct vision as a "dry" procedure, there is less risk of trauma and infection. It is considered good for soft to moderately hard wax and wax impactions.

NICE guidelines stress that adults should not be offered ear syringing with the following conditions: dermatologic diseases of the ear canal; recurrent otitis externa; keratosis obturans; prior radiation therapy affecting the ear; previous tympanoplasty/myringoplasty, mastoidectomy, or other ear canal surgery. Some of these conditions would be considered safe to treat with Microsuction".

Note: NICE is the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which is based in the UK.

Switch to LEDs for the climate

Andrew Caseley from Gen Less

Kahutara Primary School in Featherston is switching to LEDs. All LEDs are Gen Less bulbs as they use less energy, which ultimately helps halt climate change. If we all got on board and switched now it would make a huge difference
