After debate around whether Matariki should become a public holiday, ACT leader David Seymour said he was "open" to public holidays being scrapped in New Zealand - well, all but Anzac and Waitangi.

He says people should be able to make their own holiday arrangements, rather than the Government telling us when to take the day off.

We want to know your thoughts. Should people be able to make their own holiday arrangements? Or should we leave our holidays as is?

Changing Jobs

Rhonda Neighbourly Lead from Hastings Central

Last year I decided to follow my heart and have a go within an industry I was keen to be involved with over 20 years ago. When I left school, I trained as a teacher. When I left school, I trained as a teacher. Truth is I loved the kids, and I loved teaching. I have lived in Vanuatu as a volunteer, and spent time in Nicaragua, Cambodia and Samoa for short periods of time also volunteering. A number of things have led me have a go in a different direction. So, I am excited about a new venture as a Funeral Celebrant. After my first service a few weeks ago, I knew I was on the right track when guests came and asked me, "How did you know (name of the lady whose service it was)?" and "Did you know (name of lady)?". I am hoping to keep learning as much as I can, and to be privileged enough to officiate at some more funeral services in the near future.
At the beginning of this year, a friend of mine who is a vet, also decided to have a go at something different. She is training to be someone who writes information for businesses to be able to put on their websites. Another vet friend is considering getting into Market Gardening! And just this week I met a lady who has been in sales in shops and has become a Caregiver in a residential facility. She commented that she is really happy at the end of the day because she knows she has made a real difference.
Another friend who trained as an engineer has become a farmer!
So, I was wondering about all those times at school we were told that we would not have one job like our parents did, but we might have a number of jobs. And all but one of the women I am speaking of above, including myself are all about 50 years old - so I have also wondered if there are other women out there who are turning 50(ish) and have changed careers?
Non meaning to leave out the men here, ...it's women who have come to my attentions...that's all.
So, here is a conversation starter.... are you in the process of beginning a new career? ...are you brave enough to say if you are also 'mid-life' and changing career? Do you have a couple of things that have gone really well? Any advice? ... Guys, you are very welcome to comment too! :-)

Free soil

Shiree from Mayfair

We have excess soil that we hope may be useful to someone else. We need to remove a lot of soil from gardens so we can apply mulch.

Soil is good quality but probably includes some weeds (or at least seeds).

Might be able to arrange delivery.

When I am in an 80km zone and following a truck, they are speeding off in front of me.
If a truck is behind me, again I'm doing 50kms, they are right behind me and if I had to slam on my brakes, well let's not go any further but to say I would be saying hello to my maker. And this happens when driving my school bus too!
They are hooning down our road and cannot be going the 50kms they are meant to be.
And then there's the amount of accidents with trucks involved... a little concerning.
