Hi Everyone.
If you travel along Omahu Road during the week, you may notice that several of the young Oak Trees planted by the Council are in desperate need of a drink. Especially the ones at the Fernhill end - between the State Highway 50 turnoff and RioFab (Sheet metal business).

For years now my husband and I have been taking big containers of water with us every time we go out in summer, and watering them. But we don't go out often enough now to make a huge difference.
It would be wonderful if a few more people did this, and helped keep them alive and growing. Our/your rates paid for them to go in and it would be a shame if we lost them.
It's not a huge task but would make a big difference if some of you could do this too.
A word of warning though, make sure you pull well off the road before getting out of your vehicle along Omahu Road. We don't want any accidents!
Hopefully thanking your in advance :)

The upper back and flanks are dark reddish brown with a bronze sheen, the nape and sides of the neck have filamentous white feathers, and there are two unusual curled white feather tufts on the throat (poi). Small white shoulder patches on the upperwing show prominently in flight, but are usually concealed when perched.
Their preferred diet is nectar and honeydew, and they will often shift to, or commute daily or more frequently to, good nectar sources, such as stands of puriri, kowhai, fuchsia, rewarewa, flax, rata, pohutukawa, gums and banksias.
Tui are beautiful in your garden and you can easily bring them "home" to your place by setting up feeding stands. We feed "our" Tui with sugared water and every day we get to enjoy how beautiful they are.
What birds do you have in your garden?

Our tree team is keeping an eye on them and they get watered at least once a week. The team tells me that dry weather, wind and gravelly soils does mean that it takes a bit longer for trees to 'hit their straps' in that area. They also tell us that the browning does not necessarily mean they are dying - just that they are dropping their leaves so they can conserve moisture. We do have a lovely lady, Brenda, sho says she has been taking them some extra water. That's awesome! Thank you for helping care for the trees. PS more mulch is being added asap.
