Summer Getaways - Karen Merriman

Matthew Salmons Reporter from Northern Outlook

Karen Merriman took her son Lee and his mates on the classic kiwi camping getaway to the Waipara River not once, but twice this year.
There was even a third excursion planned for the future.
The family had been seeking a spot to forge a family tradition, and the Waipara River, with plentiful eels and great swimming was the spot for them.
"We've been looking for a regular camping spot. We looked at Kaikoura, but here it's so much closer ... and you still feel like you've been camping."
Some of the kids they took to the spot had never camped before and just loved it, Merriman said.

Did you get away to somewhere awesome over summer? If you've got a great holiday snap to share, email it to matthew.salmons@fairfaxmedia.co.nz, along with your name and contact details and we'll spread the word about your favourite holiday destination.

Toxic algae

The Team from Environment Canterbury

We've had early reports of toxic algae in some of our awa/rivers. Unfortunately, dogs like to seek out the algae and eat it, causing serious harm.

We monitor water quality at recreation sites over summer for toxic algae, however, site assessments are based on the risk to human health. It is not always possible to observe small amounts of toxic algae that could still be dangerous for dogs.

If you’re ever in doubt about the water quality, then keep your dog on a leash and away from the water’s edge.

It's vital to know what to look for to keep your dogs safe 👉 www.ecan.govt.nz...

Tutu

The Team from Humans of Christchurch Ōtautahi

“I’m from Tamaki Makaurau. I have a good job with Riverside market. I am security, and we need this area nice and clean. We don't want dirty things everywhere, like rubbish.

I like Christchurch because there's lots of entertainment, lots of people, all loving, give me aroha, tautoko mai. Kia kaha, be strong.”

I've been a hustler for 18 years now. I'm a lover, I'm a hustler. I'm in here to entertain Christchurch, all around Christchurch. I'm a busker and I'm an entertainer.”
