Falling over isn’t part of the aging process

It’s ‘April Falls’ this month, and we’re raising awareness of preventing falls. We want to help you stay on your feet and living the life you want to live.

As we age, the risk of having a fall increases. Those over the age of 65 have a 1 in 3 chance of having a fall and those over 80 it’s 1 in 2.

Having a fall can be devastating and can often result in a broken bone, which is painful and can take a long time to heal stopping us from doing the things we love.

The good news is that many falls are preventable. A new movement called Live Stronger for Longer aims to help reduce the risk of having a fall so we can live an independent and active life.

Having good strength and balance is key to staying on your feet. You can find approved community strength and balance classes in your area and practical information, advice, and resources on reducing the risk of falls.

Live Stronger for Longer and join the movement today.

Proudly brought to you by ACC, HQSC, MOH and your local community health providers.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD FUNCTIONING BRAKES

"You gotta have good brakes. If you have good brakes you can keep yourself out of a lotta trouble".

Brakes should be regularly inspected, at Clarksun Automotive Ltd we recommend having your vehicle test driven to see how the brake system works. Then a visual inspection, measuring pad and shoe thickness, check for even shoe and pad wear, check rotors for run out and hot spots, check hardware to make sure it is working properly and is also adjusted properly. Make sure wheel cylinders, brake lines and brake master cylinder are not leaking, inspect calipers for wear, free movement and fluid leaks, and check the level and condition of the brake fluid. Inspect proper routing and placement of the brake and antilock brake sensors.

All of these components need to be in good shape and working properly for the vehicle to have 100% brake system effectiveness while driving. For instance, did you know brake fluid is hydroscopic (meaning it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere). Brake fluid with high moisture content can corrode the system from the inside out and boil causing brake fade or failure.

If experiencing any of the following issues get immediate mechanical attention- low or spongy brake pedal, constant squealing or grinding brake noise, brake warning light on dash, vibrations or clunking noises when applying brakes.

We recommend having your brake system checked with each engine Service or at least every 6 months or 10,000 k's.

If you're wondering a Warrant of Fitness (W.O.F) inspection will check the performance of the brakes on the day, but it is not an invasive inspection so nothing is dismantled to monitor their wear or indicate how long the components are likely to last. It's up to the individual to ensure their vehicle is routinely maintained.

Hi Everyone,
We are currently looking for Meals on Wheels volunteers to help us deliver hot healthy meals to people in the community who cannot cook or prepare their own meals. By doing so, you will be supporting amongst the most vulnerable in our community.
As a volunteer with New Zealand Red Cross you will be part of a family. We take pride in our volunteers and are involved in actively supporting and empowering our volunteers.
As a Meals on Wheels Volunteer Driver you will be directly involved in supporting vulnerable members of our community in Hamilton. Your role will be to pick up the hot meals prepared at the Waikato Hospital before dropping the meals off along a pre-determined route in a specific Hamilton suburb.
We are looking for someone with a warm smile and a friendly attitude who has a clean drivers license and access to a vehicle.
You can either volunteer regularly (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) or express interest in being a casual or back up driver (if one of our regulars cannot make it).
If you are interested, please send an email at waikato@redcross.org.nz or submit an online application through our website.
