Taupō hapū to restore public access to popular lakeside reserve

A Taupō hapu has agreed to restore full public access, and even enlarge the size of a popular lakeside campground, at Motutere on State Highway 1.

After a long and drawn out consultation process, with 921 pages of submissions, involving Ngāti Tuwharetoa hapū Ngāti Te Rangiita ki Waitetoko, Taupō District Council, the general public, and the Australian-based leaseholder and owner of Motutere Bay Holiday Park, councillors voted to approve a new management plan for the Motutere Recreation Reserve.

The city's new mayor is setting out his plan

Hamilton City Council is pledging to cut costs and avoid “gold plating” infrastructure as part of a new strategy to limit rates increases, but Mayor Tim Macindoe says central government support may be needed to meet a new national rates cap.

Macindoe said Wellington needed to be “a little more nuanced” and take population growth into account.
