Mourners arrive for King's tangi

Thousands assembled in Ngāruawāhia at Tūrangawaewae Marae on Sunday to pay respects to Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII as tribes from across the country prepare to pay their respects this week.

Members of iwi and hapu far and wide gathered to attend the 8am and 2pm pōwhiri and, amongst the crowds were three members of the Kāwhia Māori Womens Welfare League - mother-daughter-aunty trio Ruth Waterhouse, Kelly Isherwood and Tiki Porima-Ryan.

Hamilton’s boom-town status has been called into question as Hamilton City Council grapples with the need to bring rates within Government mandated limits.

Councillor Andrew Bydder said assumptions about relentless population growth may be “out of date”, and called for a review of the issue early next year.
