We understand that the global fuel situation is causing people to feel nervous, and some are concerned it could lead to an increase in fuel theft and related crime ⛽ Nationally, Police is watching closely for any trends around fuel theft and associated offences.

Police will remain visible in our communities and will respond to any incidents as they arise.

We know many people feel more reassured if they know what steps they can take to help keep themselves and their property safe.

🔸Keep your car locked in a garage.
🔸If you can’t park your car in a garage then park it on your property with the fuel cap close to the wall or another vehicle to restrict access.
🔸Have security/sensor lighting on around your car, fuel tanks and fuelling areas.
🔸Try to keep fuel out of sight, and ensure fuel tanks are secured and locked to restrict theft and tampering.
🔸Report all suspicious behaviour or incidents to Police: 105 or 105.police.govt.nz for non-urgent matters; or 111 for emergency situations that are happening now.

It may be by good fortune rather than good design, but Super Rugby Pacific officials can back-slap themselves silly that they have in the end got their tough middle month of competition just perfect.

After an Easter weekend that was nothing short of diabolical on the scheduling front (just three games, and no Kiwi derbies), the end of daylight savings has far from dimmed the brightness, and instead put it up in lights, thanks to two top-of-the-table clashes on successive Saturday nights.

As Cyclone Vaianu continues to move south, it is forecast to bring extremely strong winds, heavy rain and large swells to large parts of New Zealand over the weekend.

This storm has the potential to be a significant and damaging event. We know this will be unwelcome news for communities that have recently been affected by severe weather and are still recovering.

More rain falling on ground that’s already saturated, means impacts like fallen trees, landslides, flooding and dangerous river conditions are more likely.

Please stay safe in severe weather. If life, health or property is in danger, call 111 immediately.

During a storm, stay inside. Don't walk around outside. Don't drive unless necessary. Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause branches and debris to fly at high speed.

Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.

Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater.

If you see a landslide, move out of its path and stay away from it. It is important to recognise the warning signs and act quickly.

When it is safe to do so, check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.

For advice on how to prepare for dangerous winds and severe weather visit GetReady.govt.nz

For local emergency updates, check your council's and Civil Defence Emergency Management Group’s websites and social media.

We hope you are doing okay out there. Below is an update from Civil Defence Waikato:

🌬️CYCLONE VAIANU Overnight Update: Sunday 12 April 🌧️

Mōrena, as forecast, Cyclone Vaianu impacted overnight. The cyclone is tracking as expected down the east coast of the North Island, with potentially damaging impacts likely today and this evening.

There are widespread power outages across Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty. Power companies are restoring services in some areas where it is safe to do so. Some at risk communities in other North Island regions have been evacuated, and Civil Defence Centres have been opened to receive displaced people.
The system brings a combination of damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding, and coastal inundation, with the potential for more power outages, road closures, and isolated communities.

MetService, NEMA, Civil Defence Emergency Management Groups, NZDF, Police and FENZ have been activated in response to Cyclone Vaianu, with coordinated efforts underway across agencies and CDEM Groups.
If you are yet to feel the impacts of Vaianu, there is still time to prepare:
🔹Prepare for power cuts. Have torches ready and ensure you have access to a battery or solar-powered radio so you can stay up to date with the latest information and alerts.
🔹Check on neighbours, especially those who may be elderly, isolated, or without reliable communications.

Stay safe:
🔸The combination of damaging winds, heavy rain and coastal inundation makes this a potentially life-threatening event.
🔸More rain falling on ground that’s already saturated, means impacts like fallen trees, landslides, flooding and dangerous river conditions are more likely.
🔸Put safety first. Don’t take any chances.
🔸During a storm, stay inside. Don't walk around outside. Don't drive unless necessary. Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause branches and debris to fly at high speed.
🔸Act quickly if you see rising water. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
🔸Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater.
🔸If a landslide occurs – or you see any signs that the ground is unstable – evacuate immediately. Watch for warning signs like small slips or rockfalls, water flowing out of a slope, trees or fences that start to tilt or doors and window frames that start to stick.
🔸Don’t wait for emergency mobile alerts or other official warnings if you see flood waters rising or suspect that a landslide is about to occur – trust your danger sense and act immediately.
🔸Keep up to date with MetService watches and warnings and follow the advice of your local Civil Defence group and emergency services.

A new scam is out there with scammers claiming to be ANZ through WhatsApp, texts, emails, and phone calls. Their goal? To get your personal or banking info — and your money.

ANZ have shared details about how to protect yourself, and these apply to any message from your bank.

Think twice before acting and...
✅Double-check who’s contacting you. If something feels off, don’t reply.
✅Contact the bank directly using official details (their website or app) - not the message you received.
✅Don’t click links in unexpected or suspicious messages.
✅Never share sensitive info like codes, passwords, or banking logins - they will never ask for these.
✅Don’t allow remote access or screen sharing on your device, even if they claim to be from a trusted organisation.

ANZ shared that they may contact you to check a transaction but they will never ask for access to your device, security codes, or to move your money.
