EarthDiverse, the Waikato Interfaith Council, the Hamilton City Council, the Waikato Multicultural Council, Matariki ki Waikato, the Bahá’í Community, (and many other other partners) are co-organising a Community-wide tree planting event to take place in Hamilton on Saturday 6 July 2024, 10:30am-1:30pm (This year’s event will take place Rain or Shine). Please use the Rotokauri Rd entrance, opposite Kourataki Rd instead of the entrance across from the Zoo. If you use the new entrance across from the Zoo you won’t find us as we’ll be on the other side of the Park!
Bring a spade or shovel, gumboots, appropriate outdoor weather gear (e.g. hat, rain gear, sunglasses), some gardening gloves, water and a big smile. If you don’t want to dig there are other ways to help out (like bringing a small food donation, or helping with setting out and serving a light lunch). A light lunch will be served (courtesy of EarthDiverse, Kaivolution, Go Eco, Waikato Interfaith Council, the Bahá’í Community, Ahmaddiyya Muslim Community, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Trust, and others). Any ready to eat food donations (e.g. bread, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, baked goods, UHT milk, tea bags, instant coffee, juice, etc.) will be much appreciated. Please bring your own plates, cutlery or mugs in order to minimise waste. 100 people would mean planting 5-10 saplings each.
This event is free, family-friendly and fun! Open to all. Mark this date in your diaries now. Come and help offset your carbon usage!
Organisers:
• 9:30-10:00am: set up marquees, booths, tables, food, etc.
Schedule:
• 10:15-10:30am: arrive and find parking on Rotokauri Rd.
• 10:30-11:00am: Intro, welcome and health & safety briefing at carpark
• 11:00-12:15pm: plant saplings in Waiwhakareke reserve
• 12:15-1:30pm: shared free buffet lunch; mingling and networking
NOTE: Please do not use the car park across from the Zoo entrance on Brymer Rd this year due to ongoing development work. Please park along Rotokauri Rd and Kourataki Road. Helpers will be there to guide you. Once parked, enter Waiwhakareke via the Rotokauri Road Gate. Marquees and tables for organising groups can be set up just inside the gate. We will gather here, just inside the Rotokauri Rd gate for our 10:30am orientation, then we will walk to the tree planting area. The light lunch will be served near the Rotokauri gate.

Rentokil Initial issued an urgent public safety notice in the wake of the theft of Feratox, a cyanide poison used for pest control, which it said took place overnight between June 12/13 in Hamilton from a company vehicle.
He said their number one concern at present was public safety. He also said he had a message for whoever had taken the items.
“Please return the goods. They’re very dangerous and could cause immense harm to the public.”
The company said police, the Environmental Protection Authority, Waikato Regional Council and “all other relevant authorities” have been notified of the theft.
Anyone who comes across the material is asked not to touch it and immediately contact police on 111, or the EPA on 0800 225 537.
According to the safety data sheet from Feratox manufacturers Connovation, the bait station product is fatal if swallowed, fatal in contact with skin and is also “suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child”.
It is also “very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects”.
Anyone who comes into contact with the poison is urged to seek immediate medical attention, and symptoms can include dizziness, rapid breathing, headache, drowsiness, rapid pulse, unconsciousness and convulsions.

New Zealand Police are advising the public to be vigilant, after a handful of reports have been made in recent days. Unfortunately, at least two elderly Aucklanders have been conned out of tens of thousands of dollars.
Waitematā CIB’s Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting says scammers are cold calling, mainly on landlines, and claim to be a Police officer.“They will also provide a fake ID or badge number to make their call seem legitimate,” he says.“This person will carry on and provide a reason for their call: either they are investigating fake bank notes, or that your credit card has been cloned.
“As part of this scam, they will ask you to withdraw money from a nearby bank to be collected or ask you to provide further financial or banking information to aid their investigation.”
Be aware: this is a scam call.
Police are investigating two reports this week, in south Auckland and the North Shore, where two people have fallen victim to the scam. “Both victims withdrew cash from a bank and handed this over to someone who arrived at their door to collect it under the fake cover story,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says.“These victims have had their good-will and trust trodden on by these scammers.”
Investigation staff have ensured there is support available for the victims. Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says: “Scammers have no ethics whatsoever and will take any opportunity to try and con you.“These scams take many forms, and the offenders trick people under a variety of guises or storylines.”
There are occasions where legitimate Police officers will contact people as part of their duties, he says.
Police are asking the community to be aware and take the opportunity to spread the word amongst friends and family members. “We are particularly keen to ensure elder family members are aware of what is happening,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says. “If anyone receives a call of this nature, hang up.
“If you have had the unfortunate position of being a victim to this scam and have not reported this, we encourage you to report this to Police.”
Please remember:
- Police will never call to ask you for bank details, pin numbers or passwords
- Police do not offer prize money
- Police will not ask you to go to a bank to withdraw money
- If you receive a call out of the blue of a similar nature: challenge the caller to identify themselves, ask for their details.
- Hang up, contact 105 to verify the ID and request the officer to contact you
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
