Minister weighs in on City’s homelessness issue

The Minister for Mental Health says there’s no easy answer for the city’s “complex” anti-social behaviour issues, but new step-down accommodation being rolled out may help to free-up a mental health sector bottleneck.

Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey said in-patents in mental health care facilities were spending more time than needed there, contributing to high occupancy rates in the institutions.

Vandalism is costing ratepayers - what can be done to better protect our public spaces?

Vandals have repeatedly damaged public amenities across the Waikato District, leaving ratepayers to pick up the bill. So far in 2025, the cost has climbed to nearly $123,000, reports the Waikato Times.

The council is urging residents to report vandalism as soon as possible.
