MUST-READ COUNCIL POST
What I am standing for:
✅ People and the environment first.

✅ Community connectivity and engagement - with each other and with our council.

✅ Effective and efficient spending of ratepayer's money.

✅ Housing - Affordable homes (that are actually affordable) and high-density housing.

✅ Sustainability and future-proofing - more green spaces, more biodiversity (more planting of native trees), safe cycleways to encourage people to use their bikes (part of infrastructure too).

✅ New initiatives to help combat suicide, domestic violence, mental illness, and homelessness and assist the working poor.

✅ Hemp farming and medical cannabis - I believe this bill is going to pass in the national referendum next year. Hamilton needs to be prepared. There are millions of dollars to be made for our local economy, and potentially hundreds of jobs to be created. (This does not mean recreational cannabis).

Do you agree?
Waikato Tainui has made the suggestion to Hamilton City Council as the council nuts out a revamp of the gardens.
Mayor Andrew King said a busload of tourists visiting the gardens would also be able to pre-book a cultural show at the same place.
He hoped it would encourage more visitors into overnight stays, instead of a stop on the way to another destination.

Hi neighbours - thousands of school kids will get a free lunch at school, Jacinda Ardern has announced.

Ardern says "children themselves told us during the consultation on the strategy that going to school hungry was a barrier to their learning."

Education spokeswoman Nikki Kaye says the Government hasn't considered that most schools don't have infrastructure for large scale food preparation and storage. She says "this would cost hundreds of millions and take away the autonomy of parents to provide lunch for their children".

What are your thoughts? Do you think this is a fantastic or flawed idea? Would you prefer that schools prepared your child's lunch?

Why do you think people aren't voting for mayors and councillors?

The Team Reporter from Hamilton Press

Last time Kiwis chose local governments, Waikato councils had the lowest four voter turnout figures.

Curriculum changes would reset a national framework so that all learners and ākonga were aware of key aspects of New Zealand history and how they had influenced and shaped the nation.

What do you think? Should New Zealand history be taught in all schools, or are there other, more important subjects to teach?
