With holidays coming to an end and more warm weather on the way, we’re reminding Hamiltonians to keep being smart with their water. There are lots of simple ways you can reduce your water use over summer to avoid moving to higher alert levels including washing your car on a piece of lawn that needs watering, using a timer with your sprinkler and taking shorter showers!

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

Derelict Tokanui Hospital site in line for a clean-up
Derelict Tokanui Hospital buildings will be demolished and contaminated land cleaned up so the site can be offered back to iwi.
The former psychiatric hospital, southeast of Te Awamutu, sits on land taken from Ngāti Maniapoto under the Public Works Act in 1910.
