A coroner is calling for a total ban on fishing at a notorious Waikato west coast spot that has claimed nearly two dozen lives.
Coroner Erin Woolley released her findings this week into the deaths of Olson Canatoy, 52, and Eric Dabalos, 44, who drowned at Papanui Point in October 2021.

Derelict Tokanui Hospital buildings will be demolished and contaminated land cleaned up so the site can be offered back to iwi.
The former psychiatric hospital, southeast of Te Awamutu, sits on land taken from Ngāti Maniapoto under the Public Works Act in 1910.
