At this year’s Tiny Home Expo at Mystery Creek, a new addition is drawing the crowds: granny flats.
The Building and Construction (Small Stand-alone Dwellings) Amendment Bill which would allow buildings up to 70sqm to be built without a building consent, is expected to be confirmed by the end of the year.

Widow’s fight for change after husband’s ‘blasé’ care at Waikato Hospital
Nigel Dring had looked forward to retirement, but only got months to enjoy it.
His death in July 2023 - two days after a medical appointment - sparked an investigation at Waikato Hospital and his widow says she’s still shocked at “blasé” treatment in the days before he died.
While Nigel had told one doctor he was “really struggling to breathe”, no-one made them feel like he was in danger, Lynn Dring said.
