Surf club gets consent to save Sunset Beach
After almost two years of back and fourth between a surf club trying to save its beloved beach, and a council keen for it to move, the club has been granted consent to save Sunset Beach.
Driven by the Sunset Beach Surf Lifesaving Trust with strong backing from locals, the trust has raised $300,000 to build a coastal erosion protection structure at Sunset Beach at Port Waikato.

Widow’s fight for change after husband’s ‘blasé’ care at Waikato Hospital
Nigel Dring had looked forward to retirement, but only got months to enjoy it.
His death in July 2023 - two days after a medical appointment - sparked an investigation at Waikato Hospital and his widow says she’s still shocked at “blasé” treatment in the days before he died.
While Nigel had told one doctor he was “really struggling to breathe”, no-one made them feel like he was in danger, Lynn Dring said.
