Hamilton City councillors voted unanimously to embed art in the city’s infrastructure, backing a policy that allocates up to 1% of future project budgets to creativity.
The draft Arts in Infrastructure policy means new bus shelters, bridges and even footpaths can include design from the outset rather than art being tacked on later.

Widow’s fight for change after husband’s ‘blasé’ care at Waikato Hospital
Nigel Dring had looked forward to retirement, but only got months to enjoy it.
His death in July 2023 - two days after a medical appointment - sparked an investigation at Waikato Hospital and his widow says she’s still shocked at “blasé” treatment in the days before he died.
While Nigel had told one doctor he was “really struggling to breathe”, no-one made them feel like he was in danger, Lynn Dring said.
