Mayor slams ‘bread and circus’ govt as 100 more jobs go in Tokoroa
South Waikato mayor Gary Petley has come out swinging at a government he says “doesn’t give a toss” about regional New Zealand, and the impending closure of Carter Holt Harvey’s Tokoroa plywood plant.
Faced with the second major plant closure in a year in his patch, a visibly angry Petley pointed to it coming the same week as a major event fund to attract big offshore acts.

Widow’s fight for change after husband’s ‘blasé’ care at Waikato Hospital
Nigel Dring had looked forward to retirement, but only got months to enjoy it.
His death in July 2023 - two days after a medical appointment - sparked an investigation at Waikato Hospital and his widow says she’s still shocked at “blasé” treatment in the days before he died.
While Nigel had told one doctor he was “really struggling to breathe”, no-one made them feel like he was in danger, Lynn Dring said.
