All non-essential businesses were required to shut their doors once the coronavirus lockdown came into effect, with only supermarkets and pharmacies among the few still trading.
However, the government has made changes to the essential services list, allowing a number of retailers the opportunity to open their doors and sell select products they deemed essential to life in New Zealand. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) announced the changes on Tuesday.

All non-essential businesses were required to shut their doors once the coronavirus lockdown came into effect, with only supermarkets and pharmacies among the few still trading.
However, the government has made changes to the essential services list, allowing a number of retailers the opportunity to open their doors and sell select products they deemed essential to life in New Zealand. Unfortunately That means that we won’t be able to print and deliver our your paper over the remaining period of the lockdown. Waikato people struggling to get food and other necessities during lockdown now have a number to call.
Freephone 0800 800 405 was set up by the Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group for people struggling to get food, groceries, medication or other household goods and services.
The group is not yet sure how big the need is, and say the 0800 number doesn't replace other Government helplines.

"You might feel safer wearing a mask, and you can do that if you want to, but COVID-19 isn't airborne. It's spread by droplets, which means you're most likely to catch it by touching something with a droplet on it (and then touching your face). If you choose to wear a mask or gloves, you still need to wash your hands carefully and often."
The people who need protective equipment are those working with confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19, the ministry said. You can find information on protective gear, including how and when to use it, on health.govt.nz/covid-19 |the Ministry of Health website|.

Senior Sergeant Kris Clarke in the Waikato DCC tells us police are getting a lot of calls from people concerned that others are flouting lockdown rules.
At this stage, police are informing people and encouraging them to comply - and meeting "very little resistance", Clarke said.
Overall, the streets are much quieter than usual, she said.
Free counselling is available for Waikato people.
This is delivered through Male Support Services Waikato, but available to males and females of any age.
It's provided thanks to counsellors working at a reduced rate and funding from the Gallagher Group.
