‘The ultimate connector’: Waikato leaders salute Jim Bolger

To most New Zealanders he was a prime minister - but for many in the Waikato region, Jim Bolger was best known as the prime mover for a new era of racial reconciliation.

Bolger, who died on Wednesday at the age of 90, was the country’s leader at the time of the formation and signing of the landmark Waikato-Tainui Raupatu agreement in 1995, in which the Crown formally acknowledged the wrongful confiscation of 1.2 million acres of Waikato land, with a Treaty settlement of $170 million.

Tucked in the heart of Matamata’s farming and industrial business area, Pepper Street Kitchen defies expectations.

The cafe is owned by contracting giant J Swap and located in their Matamata workshop. Originally it was set up just for employees about six years ago, but once word got out around town about the stellar food they switched to the commercial operation.

On Wednesday, Strategic Planning and Policy committee members debated the council’s submission on the proposed rates cap model.
