Periods of heavy rain for Westland, Southland and Clutha

The area at risk of severe thunderstorms in the South Island, along with the chance of 20mm-plus hail, are from the Nelson Lakes and south through the central South Island to inland Otago, Clutha and the east of Southland.A low over the Tasman Sea and a series of troughs are expected to move southeast over the country today (Monday) and Tuesday morning, bringing rain or showers to many areas, with heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms.

People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecast here.

Area: Westland
Valid: 21 hours from 3:00pm Tuesday to 12:00pm Wednesday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria (eg 80 to 90mm in 24h).

Area: Southland and Clutha, excluding Stewart Island
Valid: 15 hours from 6:00pm Tuesday to 9:00am Wednesday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach locally reduced warning criteria (eg 40 to 50mm in 12h).

DOC is rolling out a new tool to help figure out what to tackle first when it comes to protecting our threatened species and the things putting them at risk.

Why does this matter? As Nikki Macdonald from The Post points out, we’re a country with around 4,400 threatened species. With limited time and funding, conservation has always meant making tough calls about what gets attention first.

For the first time, DOC has put real numbers around what it would take to do everything needed to properly safeguard our unique natural environment. The new BioInvest tool shows the scale of the challenge: 310,177 actions across 28,007 sites.

Now that we can see the full picture, it brings the big question into focus: how much do we, as Kiwis, truly value protecting nature — and what are we prepared to invest to make it happen?
