A trial bus service between Lincoln, Leeston and Southbridge will be extended another year - but if residents want to keep Route 87 beyond that, they will need to make more use of it, Environment Canterbury says.

The trial will now continue through to July 2023. The extension will help determine whether Covid-19 has affected passenger numbers over the past year, the regional council says.

First launched in 2019, the trial has already been altered and extended several times in an effort to provide the community with a service that will attract enough patronage to make it permanent, Metro spokesperson Thomas McNaughton says.

"This 12-month extension is a great opportunity for the community to give this fantastic service a go and ensure we can continue to provide a sustainable connection to the city."

The trial service is comprised of three trips a day aimed at commuters and students starting at 6.43am from Southbridge to Lincoln, with return services at 4.11pm and 6.08pm from Lincoln to Southbridge.

Selwyn cats required to be microchipped from July 1

All domestic cats in Selwyn district over the age of 4 months will have to be microchipped and registered from Friday, July 1.

The Keeping Animals, Poultry and Bees Bylaw, which passed last year, aims to protect the public from nuisance, and address public health and safety issues.

The decision to include the cat microchipping requirement was made following the strong support it received during public consultation. This makes Selwyn the fourth council in the country to require microchipping of cats, along with Palmerston North City Council, Wellington City Council and Whanganui District Council.

“Microchipping your cat is the best way to ensure your lost pet gets home. It is also considered key to being a responsible pet owner,” council regulatory manager Susan Atherton said.

“A cat may go missing for a number of reasons. Often cats are also presumed to be strays and are taken to shelters by well-meaning people. Microchipping allows veterinarians and animal shelters, such as SPCA, to contact the owner once their cat is found.”

Cat owners are responsible for the one-off cost of microchipping and registration for the life of the cat with the approved microchip registry, the New Zealand Companion Animals Register (NZCAR). Microchipping can be done at any local vet. The registration with NZCAR is most commonly done for the owner by their vet at the time of microchipping, or by SPCA/rescues at the time of adoption.

The council will take an educational approach to encouraging people to microchip and register their pet.

If people find a stray cat they should continue to take them to a cat rescue, SPCA or their local vet.

For more information on the Keeping Animals, Poultry and Bees Bylaw and domestic cats requirements visit the Council website at www.selwyn.govt.nz....

From reporter Tina Law:

New plans have been released for a $125 million overbridge and safety improvements on State Highway 1 at Rolleston, south-west of Christchurch.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency announced in July last year it wanted to build a flyover across the highway linking the residential and industrial sides of the growing town.

Following consultation Waka Kotahi has changed its plans and it is now proposing a more direct flyover between Rolleston Dr North and Jones Rd rather than the angled or skewed option it consulted on last year.

It is also looking at adding more highway access points to ease travel and improve efficiency at the Weedons interchange.

Vehicles heading to Christchurch can take a free turn left onto the highway from Hoskyns Rd, after the rail crossing. Drivers from Christchurch can take a new off ramp to Rolleston and loop back over the flyover to Jones Rd.

Waka Kotahi is seeking community feedback on the plans from now until July 22.
