Gisborne woman Lois Wimutu has created a community event for all.
A CHAT about how people from suburbs like Kaiti, Elgin and Whataukopo rarely get an opportunity to meet and mix inspired Gisborne woman Lois Wimutu to create a community event for all.
The neighbourly event will be held at the railway reserve in Grey Street from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
“The event is for the community to get together and have fun,” Mrs Wimutu said.
“A few of us noticed a lot of people don’t seem to go into town often. We think a lot of people don’t know what our community has to offer. People make and grow things. This is an opportunity for people to come and see what’s on offer.”
People who would like to run a stall are invited to take arts, crafts and produce. Games with prizes for various age-groups will be held.
One-year-olds are invited be part of a prince and princess competition while three-to-five-year-olds can compete in short races.
A ball-throwing competition is open to six and seven-year-olds. Eight and nine-year-olds will be faced with a balloon-blowing challenge and 10-year-olds can be part of a guess-the-number-of-lollies game.
A teddy bear competition is open to everyone.
“I know adults who love teddy bears,” Mrs Wimutu said.
“A lot of people dress them up. They bring some awesome teddies.”
A treasure hunt will be held for under-10s and spot prizes will be available. The neighbourly event is part of social media initiative called neighbourly.
Mrs Wimutu is one of three active neighbourly leaders in Gisborne.
“We welcome all to this event,” she said.
