A Horowhenua District Council spokeswoman said contractors began clearing the slip at 11.30am, but were taking a cautious approach as it was raining and the face of the slip was still unstable.
She said Trig Rd was available as a diversion for residents, but the road was slippery and wet.
"We advise residents to use it only if absolutely necessary and to take extreme care."
