As we count down to Manawatū Art Expo, we’re putting the spotlight on an Artist A Day. For today’s feature, we’re focusing on the work of Graham Christensen – an artist who lives on a farm just outside Palmerston North, where a converted room at the back of a barn serves as his studio.
Graham did not pick up a paintbrush until his early 60’s, but he quickly showed a natural talent with oils and a great affinity with the rural landscape. It is this affinity which Graham depicts in his paintings. Each work communicates a life-long love of farming and the rugged landscape that New Zealand offers. Graham’s latest works are a reminiscence of rural life and moments in time that make up the rich tapestry of our farming communities and their significant place in our country’s history.
If you’d like to know more about Graham’s work, be sure to visit www.grahamchristensen.co.nz... and come down to Manawatū Art Expo, where Graham will be holding demos throughout the weekend!
Entry to Manawatū Art Expo is only $5 and under 14s enter for free. It’s a great opportunity to experience excellent, original artwork from around the country, and meet local artists like Graham.

Among them, today’s Artist a Day: Jin Hou.
Born in Beijing, China, Jin came to New Zealand in 2002. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media from the University of Canterbury and is currently based in Palmerston North, where she creates watercolour paintings inspired by travel and meditation.
Of her work, Jin says that painting allows her to express herself. She also finds painting to be a kind of spiritual practice, allowing her to experience a sense of oneness with the universe. When painting, Jin invests her energy and emotions in an effort to construct paintings that trigger memory and feeling: bringing viewers love, peace, and light.
Jin will be exhibiting five artworks at Manawatū Art Expo. To experience these works, be sure to visit between 9am and 4.30pm, July 15 through 17 – Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre.

With more than 90 exhibitors taking part in Manawatū Art Expo, these posts are just a snapshot of the range of brilliant New Zealand artists whose work will be on show between July 15 and 17.
Today’s feature artist is Andrea Connor, an artist whose work conveys the patterns of nature using layers of acrylic paint. Each time Andrea produces a work, she says learns something new about the rhythm of nature and her medium of choice, saying, “the surface is only the beginning, as there are multitudes of layers to explore.” She enjoys looking at ways to express these multitudes by combining multiple layers and combinations of colour.
Andrea’s primary source of inspiration is the natural world: the ever moving, ever-changing, ever-growing thing in which we all live. As such, her work has an organic, flowing theme at its the core.
She believes that it is the nature of art and the way of nature to push us beyond narrow realities, to find new or forgotten realms of pleasure.
If you'd like to see more of Andrea’s work, join us at Manawatū Art Expo - Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre - 15-17 July. It's only $5 to enter, and under 14s can come along for free!

For our fourth Artist a Day post, we’re excited to share with you the work of Val Jones. Val is a Foxton Beach-based artist working primarily in acrylic paints. In her works, Val seeks to capture the beauty of the natural world - birds, insects, landscapes, flowers and seascapes – all rendered in bold, bright colour. Val says she enjoys photographing her subjects prior to painting them, as the painting process enables her to interpret the beauty of the scene into her own, unique style.
Val will be exhibiting five artworks at Manawatū Art Expo 2022. Be sure to visit between 9am and 4.30pm from July 15 and 17 for your chance to see these vibrant artworks in person! In the interim, you can learn more about Val’s art by perusing her Instagram feed @val.jones.art.
