With cooler weather embracing the country, you may find you’re not getting out and about as much. So now is the ideal time to make sure your home is as fall-proof as possible.

The home safety checklist will give you practical tips on how to make your home safe. It covers how to avoid slips and falls in the home’s most used areas. For example, paths can get icy in winter, applying salt or sand to your path can help avoid any icy slips.

Having a fall can be upsetting. Those over 65 have a one in three chance of having a fall, while those over 80 it’s one in two.

The good news is falls are preventable. A new movement called Live Stronger for Longer is helping to reduce the risk of falls by providing practical information and free resources. We want to help you stay on your feet, and living the life you want to live.

Take the home safety checklist with your friends and family and join the movement today.

Proudly brought to you by ACC, HQ&SC, MOH and your local community health providers.

on behalf of WAG,

You just saved yourselves hundreds, probably thousands of dollars and helped other Wairarapa people, businesses and farms survive and get by. It's a result and proves it's worth getting up and having a go.
We have now received the news from enough different sources to be able to advise that GWRC have scrapped the proposed 70/30 plus plus rates hike for flood protection from the Long Term Plan until at least the next three year review point. The news has been trickling in since Friday but we just wanted to be as sure as we could before popping any champagne corks ;-)
As far as we can tell without seeing the detail in writing, this is almost exactly what we proposed as a way forward at the submissions hearing on Tuesday.
To you all and especially those who made submissions and those who spoke to their submissions at the hearing, give yourself a big pat on the back. Our district councils (Viv was awesome), Our GWRC Councillor Adrienne Staples was awesome too, Sustainable Wairarapa, Wai Voice and others also stood up and were counted. Together we have proven once again, that when we get organised and make ourselves heard, we can make good things happen.
Three years is a heck of a long time in politics and it gives us a chance to understand the costs of some of the Wairarapa flood protection schemes and be well prepared for the next GWRC LTP round and to understand the full gamut of what gets rated at what in GWR and who benefits ;-)

Now lets get this Waiohine FMP finished.

Is an important day. 10:00 a.m. Carterton Events Centre - WAG will be presenting our submission on the proposed massive rate hike for Wairarapa flood protection over the next ten years. Come along and support the team. Our approach is the usual one of defining the problem but also proposing a way forwards that could help solve it - so we hope GWRC will see this in a positive light but having support in the room plays a very big part of the outcome. Some people will be over the hill and far away but if you're this side of the hill, come along for an hour and hear and cheer. There will also be quite a number of other local folks and organisations presenting today and it will be very interesting to hear them too.

See you there Carterton Events Centre, around 10 o'clock onwards.
