April & May at the Showgrounds
Cyclone Gita did it’s fair share of damage at the showgrounds with the roof being whipped off the Jersey rooms and adjacent grandstand most of which was deposited in the gully behind the main grandstand. There was also damage to the broadcast box and a roller door blown in at the Expo hall, an insurance claim has been made and these will all be repaired over the next few weeks. Following on from the Taranaki Greyhound Racing event over Easter we have several smaller Equestrian events for the rest of the month and we did celebrate Executive Committee member Walter Smyth’s birthday in the Expo hall. The TSSSA Dressage was well attended midweek. May is always a very busy month at the showgrounds, first up is an Agrikids School day then the NZ Cutting Horse Assn annual show followed by Hawera BMX Clubs annual indoor event. Riders attend from all over the north island and there are normally about 200 competitors. Backed up to that is Little Forest Raceway who run a model car racing event in the TSB Centre. In the middle of all that action Hawera High School have their annual Cross Country race and Hawera Repertory will be moving in to the Expo hall to build the set for their next production. Canny Canines Dog Training is back up and running on a Tuesday evening. RDA will take a break over the school holidays. For further information on events please visit to our website event page,

Poll: Would you want an unconventional funeral?
Funerals can cost as much as $22,000 and the planning can be stressful especially at a time when loved ones are grieving. Some New Zealanders are re-imagining funerals by making their own coffin or having a relaxed ceremony at home. Would you want a less traditional funeral? Share your thoughts below.
