A skateboard park, a broken scooter, and not a dairy to be seen – this was the scene when Kiwi history was made.

Filmmaker Colin Evans was filming skateboarders at the local skateboard park at Fairfield in Dunedin when he captured the moment that catapulted Levi Hawken to stardom.

“Levi is a funny guy,” Evans says. “He kind of just spat it out, and I was like, ‘no way, bro’. I had no idea it was going to go viral.”

If you haven’t guessed by now, that was the moment Hawken was filmed saying: “Left my scooter outside the dairy, nek minnit...”

Various clips of Hawken’s catchphrase were uploaded to the Internet, and they have been viewed millions of times since the first one was published on YouTube, without Hawken’s or Evans’ permission, in September 2011.

Dunedin needs a new rubbish dump, and residents will get to have their say on the proposed site.

The Dunedin City Council (DCC) is proposing a new landfill at Smooth Hill, 28 kilometres southwest of the city near Brighton, to replace the current dump at Green Island, which is nearing the end of its life.

The move has raised the ire of some Brighton residents, who fear it may have negative effects on the surrounding area, particularly waterways.

Those opposed now have another chance to have their say, with the Otago Regional Council confirming it has decided to publicly notify the city council's consent application for the new landfill.

A woman who has a medical exemption for wearing a mask during Covid-19 restrictions was horrified when a store manager said she should shop elsewhere.

“I was treated like a leper,” the Dunedin woman, who requested anonymity, said of the incident, which underscores the complexities customers and shop workers face when grappling with rules under different alert levels.

Each Thursday for the last two decades she has caught a bus to shop at Countdown in central Dunedin.

But that loyalty was tested after an incident which unfolded on the morning of August 26. Read the full story here.
