Gansu Tibetan cultural visit - Rewi Alley Memorial

John from Darfield

The Gansu Tibetan group were welcomed at the Rewi Alley Springfield Memorial Park on Thursday 8th February 2024 by Grame Dawson, Chair, Springfield & Tawera residents group and Allison Rosanowski, Chair of the sister city committee and Calvin Payne & John Verry representing the Malvern Community Board. We were honoured by a musical / cultural performance. The visit fostered cultural interaction between the two regions initially linked by a common association through Rewi Alley, born in Springfield in 1897. Rewi, through his literary writings on Chinese industry and communist philosophy, became an icon in the Shandan County, Gansu Province, in northwestern China. Rewi Alley set up cooperatives and schools in China and is one reason for Selwyn’s Sister City relationship with Shandan in northwest China. Alley spent 60 years in China as an advocate for the Chinese people, establishing industrial cooperatives and technical training schools.

Share your New Zealand music memories...

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

It's NZ Music Month and New Zealand really has some beautiful songs from artists that we call our own.

Whether it's April Sun in Cuba, Don't Forget your Roots, or How Bizarre or Bic Runga's 'Sway' - songs have a way of unlocking memories and evoking old feelings.

In honour of NZ Music Month, share a New Zealand song or artist that is special to you and explain why.
