Kia ora neighbours,

We are needing to move from our house in Stanmore Bay by the 9th of October to allow the owners to sell the property untenanted. We are locals looking for somewhere tidy for myself, my 13 year old and our two well-behaved cats. 2-3 bedrooms would be ideal and I can pay up to $550 per week. My parents live in Orewa and my son attends Orewa College. I work in Albany so it would be great to find somewhere close to school/parents for my son to be able to get to and fro easily. We have great references, keep a tidy home and are interested in a long term tenancy. Pretty much my only ask is that the house gets some sunshine :) If you or someone you know are able to help us, we'd be so grateful! Thank you! Ngā mihi, Chloe 0211787361

Many of us rely on tank water and summer is a testing time to ration our supply between useful rainfalls. While we don’t need to use our dehumidifiers so much in the warmer months, when you do and it's time to empty the dehumidifiers tank, tip the water into your washing machine, every little bit of conserved water helps. We also use our dehumidifier water on our house plants without any adverse effects.

Another little tip for when we wear our masks during Covid, if like us your glasses fog up when you have your mask on, clean the lenses with a little shaving foam and remove with a soft cloth, it works 😊

Kiwis lose millions to offshore scammers

Police are warning the public to be vigilant and wary of calls from phone scammers following a rise in complaints recently which have seen some victims lose tens of thousands of dollars.

Detective Sergeant Kelly Corby from the Auckland City Financial Crime Unit said an investigation, named Operation Hyattsville, is looking into more than 20 complaints from victims who have lost money in the past couple of months to phone scammers operating overseas.

One of these victims, 80-year-old Auckland City resident Marion, was conned by the scammers in a video posted today on the Auckland City District Police Facebook page.

Marion had $10,000 taken from her account after a caller convinced her that there was an urgent issue with her Spark account and they needed to access her computer remotely to fix the issue.

The convincing scammer asked Marion to download the Teamviewer application which allowed them to access her computer before asking for her banking details.

Fortunately, Marion’s bank got in touch after noticing suspicious banking activity and the money was able to be recovered.

Detective Sergeant Corby said unfortunately in most instances the victims are not as lucky as Marion, with several million dollars lost by Kiwis to these offshore scammers in the past few months alone.

“We are not talking about small amounts of money. On average, each victim has lost around $30,000 and these losses are absolutely devastating for our victims,” he said.

“Phone scams are nothing new, however we are concerned after seeing a growing trend of cases recently where victims have been conned over the phone.”

Corby said if you think you are a victim of a phone scam, you need to act fast and notify your bank immediately.

“There is a simple way to stop yourself from being a victim. Do not give your personal banking information out over the phone and do not allow the person over the phone to access your computer,” he said.

“There is no legitimate reason that a company will need to access your computer remotely. Do not download any application which allows them to access it.

A similar investigation by the Auckland Financial Crime Unit last year, Operation Deadwood, resulted in Police charging 18 people for money laundering offences after hundreds of phone scam victims lost more than $2.5 million.

See Aotea Square in its former glory using a new augmented reality app bringing the 1800s to 2020; hear why women weren’t expected to respond to the call of nature in public places until 1910; and prepare to be intrigued by unexpected artefacts found in the rubble of recent city works.

These are just some of the stories Auckland Heritage Festival is weaving into words, walks, pictures, parks, talks, poetry and songs as Auckland Council prepares to pack well over 100 free and low-cost events into two weeks from September 26 to October 11.

Event holders are set up to follow the Covid-19 protocols required at the prevailing alert level and mass gathering limit. However, if a 10-person mass gathering limit remains in place on 26 September, every endeavour will be made to move events online.

Councillor Alf Filipaina said there is something in the festival’s storytelling for everyone including special events for children during the school holidays.

The programme of events has been designed to entertain, inform and enlighten with 2020’s intriguing theme: Uncover secrets and stories of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The 2020 festival programme will go live at heritagefestival.co.nz on September 10.
