Threatened native falcon takes to the skies again after eight months of rehab

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

A poor meal choice landed a threatened native bird in rehab for half of her young life, but this weekend she was finally able to return to the skies.

The young New Zealand falcon – or kārearea – was released by rescuers on the outskirts of Hanmer Springs on Sunday, after eight months recovering at the Marlborough Falcon Conservation Trust in Blenheim.

The juvenile female, daughter of a well-known pair who live in the heart of Hanmer Village, bit off more than she could chew last May, when a small dog caught her eye.

Poll: Have you ever been bullied?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

People associate bullying with children in schools, but it can actually stretch beyond childhood to workplaces or neighbourhoods.

This Friday is Pink Shirt Day, which began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new student was harassed for wearing pink. People across the globe are now encouraged to wear pink on this day to take a stand against bullying and promote inclusivity.

Have you or your whānau ever experienced bullying? Share your thoughts on Pink Shirt Day below.

Type 'Not For Print' if you wish your comments to be excluded from the Conversations column of your local paper.

Winter sport is in full swing at MainPower Stadium & Maria Andrews Park

The Team from Waimakariri District Council

Just a friendly reminder if you’ve got a game on in or around the stadium this weekend, please DO NOT park along the road berms in the stadium or along Coldstream Road.
Parked cars along the roadside make visibility really hard and pose a safety risk.
We have opened up Mainpower Oval carparking to make sure everyone can park safely but still close by so you won’t miss that all important warm up.
Thanks for your help – good game!
