The discovery of a broken sewer pipe has led to a shellfish ban at Ligar Bay and Tata Beach.
On social media, the council said the pipe had now been repaired, but they were unable to say how much raw sewage had flowed into the adjacent tidal area during the breakage.

On social media, the council said the pipe had now been repaired, but they were unable to say how much raw sewage had flowed into the adjacent tidal area during the breakage.
The problem was discovered on the main highway halfway between the two beachside settlements last week.
Team leader water supply and wastewater Becky Marsay told the committee the pipe was damaged while some slipwork was being cleaned.
What you need to know:
- A ban is now in place on gathering shellfish at Ligar Bay and Tata Beach, and locals have been advised that they should not have contact with the water in the estuaries until it had been thoroughly flushed by several tides.
- The area is off limits until at least Wednesday and warning signs have been erected in the area.

The survey, which started in 2020 and is ongoing, has to date found an increase of 340% in whio (blue duck) numbers since 1998-2000 when DOC last surveyed the bird.

The Richmond Spatial Intensification Plan, Richmond on the Rise, proposes two new higher density areas, where increased building heights would be permitted, alongside an easier consenting pathway for developments that are “well-designed and achieve high quality urban outcomes”.
The plan would encourage mixed use development, up to four storeys, in the Richmond town centre, with retail or office space on the ground floor and residential above. It would allow medium density apartments and townhouses, up to two to three storeys around the edges of the town centre, and provide for medium density townhouses of up to two storeys in some urban areas of Richmond.
