Plugging in... to Ilam

Jake Kenny Reporter from Community News

The weather bomb is said to be only hours away as the Plugging In tour crosses the border into Christchurch’s Ilam electorate under a clear blue sky and battered by a pellucid wind.

While the weather is providing plenty of suspense, the result in this electorate, which contains some of Christchurch’s priciest suburbs, is boringly predictable.

Gerry Brownlee, the deputy leader of the National Party, has held the seat since 1996 and in the last election National netted 52.6 per cent of the party vote compared to Labour’s 31.2 per cent. Ilam is stereotyped by its leafy streets and its Merivale Mum getting a coffee in her SUV but it contains plenty of ordinary suburbs and low decile areas.
