Happy Tuesday neighbours,

When 80-year-old Barry Souter landed his first job in a clothing store 64 years ago, the retail industry looked a lot different.

Customers were not able to browse the shelves but had to ask for clothes to be brought out from behind the counter. When a sale was made, Souter had to handwrite the sale docket. And stock-taking was very much a manual task.

But through all the changes, Souter has never stopped having fun. “It’s the people that make it. Human interaction is what keeps us all going.”

Souter’s first job was at Hallensteins in Dunedin when he was 16, and he worked for Munns in Christchurch for a long time before opening his own business in Bishopdale nearly a decade ago.

Hi neighbours,

The final design of Christchurch’s most controversial cycleway will not be confirmed until next year as the council makes several changes following unprecedented community feedback.

Christchurch City Council plans to build a $19 million 4.5-kilometre cycleway on Harewood Rd has attracted 1348 submissions – more than any other cycleway in the city so far.

Plans released in January showed the council proposed to reduce Harewood Rd from four lanes to two to make way for cycle lanes, and install eight new traffic lights, including at the Breens/Gardiners intersection and at each end of the Bishopdale roundabout.

Do you think the cycleway should go ahead?

Happy Tuesday Cantabs,

The family behind a brewery born from the rubble of the Christchurch earthquakes are “in a state of disbelief” following their third win at the World Beer Awards.

Cassels & Sons has thrived in its Woolston site since the quakes struck a decade ago.

On Friday, the team woke to discover their American pale ale (APA) had been named the world’s best for 2021 at the World Beer Awards in the United Kingdom.

The small Garden City brewery pipped several well-known global brands with its third win in a row at the awards, leaving owner Alasdair Cassels in “a state of disbelief”.

Not bad from little old Woolston, eh?
