The Maine Coon –one of the country’s most expensive breeds at $2,500 a cat – soared in demand during the Covid-19 lockdown last March.
Enquiries for the “gentle giant” cats increased from 15 to 20 per week to about 20 per day, as Kiwis increasingly searched for ways to spend their money and time around home, one breeder said.
Do you own an expensive cat breed? Let us know below. Pics welcome!

Does anybody out there happen to have any of the old green recycle bins from about 10 years ago? I could do with a few for our garden. Many thanks. Alan.

Please meet Alyce Read of Nelson, who uses her houseplant collection to connect with others and help them overcome mental health challenges. "You wouldn’t take a plant and put it in a dark corner and fail to water it and expect it to thrive. So we should look at ourselves that way," she says. "If we are not thriving in the way that we would wish, it might not be any fault of ours, it might be the conditions that we are under."

The options for doing so are endless! Being kind doesn’t have to cost a thing, after all a smile is free. For those who want to go the extra mile, here’s some other ideas: take a gift over to new neighbours and introduce yourself, build a free community library for your street, buy extra kai at the grocery store to donate to a food bank, bring treats into work for colleagues, send an encouraging text to someone who needs it, let a car into the traffic ahead of you, write positive messages in chalk on sidewalks around your neighbourhood, or surprise loved ones with a visit.
Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re spreading kindness this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to:

Work to convert Christchurch’s heritage-listed Old Post Office building into a multi-use hospitality space is taking shape.
The Press was given a sneak peek inside The Grand, which will occupy the two-storey building in Cathedral Square, plus a large outdoor section. It is scheduled to open in December.
The space includes a restaurant, café and bars, an i-Site visitor information centre, artisan bakery, pâtisserie, florist and gift store, and a South Island food tasting experience promoting local wine, beer, cheese and meat.
Did you visit the old post office before the quakes? And will you visit this new offering once it's ready?
More pictures available in the story by clicking 'Read More' below. Please note the attached image was taken shortly after the 2011 quakes.
