His overseas itinerary for 2020 was supposed to include a sailing trip to Fiji, watching wildlife in the Australian outback, rafting in Russia and a road trip through the United States.
Instead, the 63-year-old and wife Mary Tritt visited Northland and the Marlborough Sounds, sailed the Hauraki gulf, made eight mountain biking and cycle trail trips, fished on charter boats in the Bay of Islands, and spent $24,000 on a bucket-list cruise to the subantarctic islands.

A cycle/skate/scooter track in Christchurch's central city has been extended to make use of vacant central city sites.
For both kids and adults to enjoy and work on their road skills, the detour track was unveiled on Wednesday to eager anticipation, after a month-long build.
Its location on the corner of Manchester St, Armagh St and Gloucester St in the central city takes advantage of vacant Fletcher Living sites that will eventually have apartments built on them.
Gap Filler project manager Damian Doyle said the track was a way of giving something back to the community and putting the sites to good use whilst they were temporarily vacant.
Doyle said he hoped initiatives such as this would have scope to become permanent in the future.
