Rowing is one of Judy’s passions, and she’s had great success with it, competing up and down the country since picking up the sport in her 50s. A highlight in her rowing career was in 2017 when Judy, along with her rowing partner Alison, competed in The World Masters Games, winning a silver medal in the 1000m Women’s Pairs.
She currently holds the title of top women's single sculler in the 70-75 year age group in New Zealand and is second in the North Island for the 65-75 year age group.
Adventure is in Judy’s DNA. She’s always up for hitting the open road and exploring the fantastic wilderness that Aotearoa has to offer. When she’s not rowing, Judy loves to hike. And she’s no stranger to several hard South Island trails.
Having a lifestyle this active and busy means that Judy doesn’t want to be worrying about her home while she is away. She chose Ryman’s Murray Halberg Village because it suits all her needs, right down to the location near the water as well as all the safety and security benefits.
“It’s a lock up and leave it situation,” she says.

Growing up in my family, we all fought over food, but when I think back now, I don’t remember any of them eating stale baking. I loved stale baking because I knew I’d get to eat it all – no one else wanted it. Back then quantity was everything, I wanted more, more, more.
Alongside this preoccupation with food was a preoccupation with myself. I was a shy, scared, secretive child. I may not have been saying much, but I had a lot of thinking.
Coming into the teenage years I became very conscious of my body. I was fussy about my looks, the clothes I wore and what people thought of me. I had an insatiable need to be liked.

Public health doctor Anna Stevenson believes one of the main problems is accessibility.
“If you want to get from one part of the city to the other part, if you’re a fully able-bodied person with courage and the wind behind you, you can usually manage," she says. "But if you have a pushchair and have small children or a wheelchair … you would actually find it very difficult to navigate the city safely.”
Public toilets and water fountains are scarce too, she claims.

The Christchurch City Council decided on Wednesday to ask Environment Minister Penny Simmonds to pause the $4.2 million independent hearings process, which is considering housing density rules imposed by the former Government.
Due to existing laws the council can not make the decision itself.
The intensification plan being considered allows three residential buildings of three storeys each to be built, without a resource consent, across vast parts of the city. It also allows for higher limits in main suburban centres.
The plan, which has garnered strong opposition from residents’ groups, provides enough space for housing for the next 150 years.
But the new Government has said it would make the density standards optional for councils.
