Thousands of homes are without power in Canterbury.

According to Orion's website approximately 50,000 properties had no power on Thursday morning.

Power outages have been reported at many suburbs including Addington, Cashmere, Spreydon, Riccarton, Sydenham, Hoon Hay Valley, Wigram, Tai Tapu, Sockburn, Westmorland, Wigram and Akaroa.

The New Zealand Transport Authority said signals at 35 intersections were out in south Christchurch as a result of the outage. Road users were asked to apply the give way rules.

An Orion spokeswoman said

the power outage was caused by an issue in the Transpower line from Twizel. Transpower manage the national electricity grid.

A crash involving four vehicles happened the intersection of Marshland Rd and Prestons Rd. An Ambulance was declined but NZTA advised motorists that delays were possible.

I walked into the Phillipstown Community Hub for the first time a few weeks after shifting to this side of town. I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help in the community.

WOW! What a facility we have here!

It’s huge: some of the resources they offer include groups for fitness, art, music, pottery, bicycle fixing, and that’s not including the migrant resource centre, police community hub, FREE internet cafe, OSCAR programme and the community garden.
I’ve already been along to the garden and spent a morning there. Great people, great space to come and hang out, chat, help in garden, get some produce and learn. I also found out that, if ANYONE has an idea for a group they would like to see happening, they just need to come along and have a chat with the wonderful staff. Just imagine: groups like solo parents play dates, budgeting advice, support groups, men/women groups, maybe something for the youth of our community. Its available for us ALL to use. Let’s get our thinking caps on and make the most of this wonderful facility we have in Phillipstown.

On Friday 25th February (2017) this organisation lodged a special presentation to the above listed Community Board. However this meeting was quite brief as unfortunately only 5 minutes was permitted.
Several quite concerning local community related issues were outlined. These included ongoing cut backs on much needed repairs and regular maintenance to City Council owned infrastructures around the Papanui, Redwood, Casebrook, Northcote, and Northwood areas. (i.e damaged streets, footpaths, unsuitable bus stops, safety concerns on streets, directly adjacent to busy parks and children'wwws playgrounds etc.)
Also discussed was a lack in general understanding and recognition by the Council in the many very important Disability related issues. As sadly the Christchurch City Council hasn't yet developed a competent Disability Strategy. Ironically most NZ Councils completed this task many years ago. (including Waimakariri)
For any further or additional information regarding any aspect of this recent meeting, please don't hesitate to contact our Christchurch office. Contact details are on our website. www.sigjaws.org...
