Public hearings on the Council’s annual plan are underway, including debate over whether to fund the city’s most notable heritage buildings.
Nathan Ngatai shared:
“The cathedral is the anchor that binds the city together, without it, the centre of the city feels incomplete.”
However, a resident has said that ratepayers must stop being a “fairy godmother” for under-funded heritage projects in Christchurch.
Christchurch resident Ross Boswell told councillors he strongly opposed the council spending more money on the cathedral saying:
“I didn’t think it was ever a particularly stunning piece of architecture. I lived in England for five years and I saw village churches that looked more impressive.”
It is estimated that about $290m is needed to fully complete:
- The Provincial Chambers
- Christ Church Cathedral
- Canterbury Museum
- The Arts Centre (including its former Dux de Lux building)
