World Bowls Championship kicked off
A special function was held at Burnside Bowling club on Wednesday evening to launch the World Bowls championships. Several international players, including New Zealand Blackjacks; the coach and some players of Tactix netball team and other sporting organisations were present. Everyone split in teams and played for an hour of so, before joining in the club rooms for mix & mingle.
The competition runs from 29th November to 11 December, and will be played at 3 different venues - Burnside Bowling Club, Fendalton Bowling Club and Bowls Papanui.
This competition will see 34 countries represented by about 240 players. Some teams have just 1 players, while others have a squad of 10. They will be playing in fours, triples, pairs and singles - in both men and women categories.
The teams come from countries as diverse as Brunei, Cyprus, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey and Macao - to name a few.
Cr Aaron Keown, fellow community board member Aaron Campbell and I attended this event on behalf of FWH community board, as well as tried our hands at lawn bowling - with varying degrees of success!
Coincidentally, all 3 venues are part of FWH area.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel will welcome all the teams formally on behalf of the city of Christchurch on Monday 28th at Civic offices.
Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
