Christchurch’s tsunami warning system is getting a $3 million upgrade as the city council installs sirens further inland and on Banks Peninsula.

The existing 45 sirens, which extend from Brooklands to Taylors Mistake, were installed between 2011 and 2015, and do not cover inland areas now deemed to be at risk of flooding if a large tsunami hits.

Banks Peninsula was also left out of the initial roll-out.

The Christchurch City Council unanimously decided on Tuesday to extend the existing system to the peninsula and other city suburbs.

The new city locations were likely to cover areas including Dallington, Avonside, Wainoni and Aranui, after parts of these areas were added to the tsunami evacuation zones following a 2019 report. Another 12,600 properties were deemed to be in the zone.

The AEA web event is a free monthly online meeting using Zoom video conferencing software. With three 10 minute speakers and member sharing. Participants can join the web event from their phone, desktop, mobile and tablet devices. ALL WELCOME

The purpose of the web events is to carry the message to newcomers who live in areas where there are no AEA meetings and to strengthen areas where there are sole AEA members. These events are not designed to replace face-to-face meetings. Rather, we hope that face-to-face meetings will grow and increase as a result of having regular web events.

Hi Canterbury,

How were you impacted by the snowfall?

It was a short, snowy blast for residents in Canterbury this week as temperatures plummeted, bringing with it magnificent photo-ops and significant disruptions.

Fine but cold weather is set to last for the next few days in Canterbury before a southerly change brings with it gale force winds and rain.

Wild and chilly weather closed roads, left several residents without power, and overwhelmed ski fields as a cold front made its way up the South Island.

"The weather is going to be fairly changeable – you'll get northwesterlies and southwesterlies and brief rain and then some fine spells, so it's fairly busy but nothing too dramatic at this stage," MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr said.

Hundreds of motorists were trapped as heavy snowfall closed alpine passes. Arthur's Pass and Porter's Pass and the Lewis Pass reopened on Sunday and through Monday morning.

Snow fell down to 100m and those in Christchurch central were greeted with snow flurries.

How have these weather disruptions affected you? Let us know in a reply below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment used in the Northern Outlook.

Christchurch will get a 30,000-seat stadium after the city council bowed to public pressure and ditched an earlier decision to build a smaller venue.

The larger stadium will cost an additional $50 million, lifting the total budget to $523m, but some councillors have warned the cost could escalate well past $600m.

If the $50m cannot be found elsewhere, Christchurch ratepayers will end up paying an additional $13.70 in rates each year for 29 years from 2024-25 – the cost of an annual takeaway burger combo.

Oceania has always believed in better and so does The Bellevue’s Care Manager, Russell.

Since returning to the South Island five years ago, Russell has been proud to witness Christchurch’s resurgence. “Christchurch is like a phoenix risen from the ashes, with a tremendous opportunity to redefine itself.” And now he is playing his part in reimagining our city’s aged care offering.

Russell has built his team at The Bellevue with one goal in mind. “As the Care Manager I believe I have a principle responsibility to set the scene in providing an environment where staff can truly excel, feel empowered and make a positive difference to the lives of residents, families and each other.”

During the transition to care, extra support is provided. “Our fantastic Guest Services Manager is the key to helping residents feel at ease when they first move in, as she provides a hospitality overlay. She’ll get to know you so that she can provide all the extra touches that make you feel at home,” says Russell.

Another initiative Russell is proud of is that couples can stay together in the same room, even if their needs are not aligned. Russell has seen the impact it has on residents - “It is just wonderful to offer couples Care Suites which allow couples to stay together – just as they always have,” says Russell.

To find out more about our Care Suites, with Rest Home and Hospital level care, get in touch with Russell today.

A controversial new $3.1 million footbridge has started to rust – before it has even opened to the public.

The bridge over the Avon River in central Christchurch has no opening date, even though construction has finished.

It was built and funded by Crown rebuild agency Ōtākaro as part of regeneration plans for the city after the earthquakes.

But the metal balustrades, designed to be reminiscent of harakeke/flax plants, have already started corroding, prompting an investigation by the bridge’s design and construction teams.
