Have you spotted seals on the Canterbury coastline?
Hey neighbours,
Sightings of several seal species roaming around the Canterbury coastline has prompted a safety reminder from the Department of Conservation.
Leopard seals, like the one pictured at Waimari Beach over the weekend, should never be approached, DOC says. They are aggressive and agile, and can inflict severe injuries to anyone that ventures too close.
They are impressive to look at, but a 20m distance should be kept and dogs kept on a leash as leopard seals can, and will, defend themselves vigorously.
If you see a leopard seal, take some photos or a short video and contact Leopard Seals NZ on 0800 536 7273.
