Another great resource, if you haven't found it already; the Christchurch City Council are updating Newsline constantly, and have the latest news from Civil Defence, emergency services and police. Stay informed, and please, stay away if you don't need to be there.

Two fires are continuing to burn tonight in the Tai Tapu/Port Hills area – one in the vicinity of Early Valley Road/Lansdowne, and the other in the Marley Hill area near the Summit Road. The evacuation of homes in the Early Valley Road area remains in place overnight, with the Tai Tapu School available for those evacuated. Road closures are in place on Early Valley Road, Holmes Road and the Summit Road from Dyers Pass Road to Gebbies Pass Road. Fire crews will remain in place overnight to patrol the affected areas, and multiple helicopters are expected to be in action from around first light tomorrow (Tuesday). Please stay well away from the area and off the roads – so that emergency services personnel can do their job and keep people safe. Thanks. www.facebook.com...

Here's a simple idea that could save lives. When a catastrophic fire is approaching, write your phone number on horses (or other animal's) hooves and then open gates so they can run to safety if required. This simple act could be a lifesaver..

Our thoughts go out to all of those affected by the wildfires blazing around Christchurch. We have a number of empty aviaries and enclosures that we are making available to anyone that needs to evacuate their birds, we are happy to look after them for as long as needed. Kia kaha and be safe!***

This means some buses will not show in our "next bus" online tools and most bus finders displaying the ETA's of buses on street will not work. It is likely that our systems will be affected for a number of days and we ask that if your bus does not appear on "next bus" tools that you use the bus timetables instead. Metro thank all fire fighters for their hard work and dedication to keeping our communities safe.

As a result of widespread power outages north and east of Christchurch, we are aware there are numerous traffic lights affected. Please take care when driving, and apply the right-hand rule, i.e. give way to traffic on your right.
We will update you as more information comes to hand.

"Canterbury District Health Board's Community and Public Health Division have issued a health warning to residents over the smoke coming from the Port Hills fires.
Officials say the small particles in smoke can be more harmful than the larger particles because they can be inhaled deep into the lungs.
Health officials are warning residents to close windows and doors.
Here are some tips from Community and Public Health if you are close to the fires:
Avoid exposure where possible by staying indoors and closing windows and doors.
Smokers, the elderly, children and those with heart disease, asthma or other lung disease are at greatest risk of harm from smoke inhalation.
Seek medical help if your symptoms worsen, especially if you have asthma, lung or heart disease, or if you start to experience breathlessness or chest pain.
In healthy people, most symptoms disappear soon after exposure to smoke ends and do not cause long-term health problems. Public health officials are urging residents to make their GP team the first call 24/7 for #carearoundtheclock.
Seek medical help if your symptoms worsen, especially if you have asthma, lung or heart disease, or if you start to experience breathlessness or chest pain. If you did not experience any symptoms at the time you were exposed to the smoke, you are very unlikely to have any long-term health effects. In an emergency phone 111.
