Animal activists happy Waikato Rodeo is postponed tomorrow

Mike from Te Awamutu

What: Animal rights protest at the Waikato Rodeo
Who: Direct Animal Action
New Date: Saturday 11th March 2017, 1pm
Where: Kihikihi Domain, Corner of Grey & Dick Streets, Kihikihi, Te Awamutu

Animal rights activists from Direct Animal Action were planning to protest outside the Waikato Rodeo tomorrow but instead are celebrating itsPostponement due to weather conditions.

“We’re really relieved the rodeo has been cancelled tomorrow. The wet weather severely increases the risk of injury to already stressed animals forced to perform in the arena,” says Amie Wolken spokesperson for Direct Animal Action.

On their Facebook page, the Waikato Rodeo have announced their rain-date as Saturday 11th March.

“We’ll be there in full force protesting for the animals on their rain-date. Footage shot at the Mid-Northern Rodeo recently exposed shocking abuse of animals including teenage cattle repeatedly shocked with electric prodders.

“We have no doubt similar types of abuse will go on at the Waikato Rodeo because this type of behaviour is intrinsic to rodeo,” says Ms Wolken.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

DOC is rolling out a new tool to help figure out what to tackle first when it comes to protecting our threatened species and the things putting them at risk.

Why does this matter? As Nikki Macdonald from The Post points out, we’re a country with around 4,400 threatened species. With limited time and funding, conservation has always meant making tough calls about what gets attention first.

For the first time, DOC has put real numbers around what it would take to do everything needed to properly safeguard our unique natural environment. The new BioInvest tool shows the scale of the challenge: 310,177 actions across 28,007 sites.

Now that we can see the full picture, it brings the big question into focus: how much do we, as Kiwis, truly value protecting nature — and what are we prepared to invest to make it happen?

We hope this brings a smile!
