You should:
• Stay inside. Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to travel take extra care due to surface water on roads and debris that may be left on the road due to previous slips.
• Drive with extreme caution if travel is essential. If you are driving at night don’t rely on signage, you may be the first to come across a slip or flooding.
• Bring your pets inside. Move stock to shelter or high ground. If you have to evacuate, take your pets with you.
• Put your household emergency plan into action and check your getaway kit in case you have to leave in a hurry. Civil Defence is advising people to have food and water for seven days, especially those who live in rural areas that are easily cut off.
• Secure, or move indoors, all items that could get blown about and cause harm in strong winds.
• Close windows, external and internal doors. Pull curtains and drapes over unprotected glass areas to prevent injury from shattered or flying glass.
• If the wind becomes destructive, stay away from doors and windows and shelter further inside the house.
• Power cuts are possible in severe weather. Unplug small appliances that could be affected by electrical power surges. If power is lost unplug major appliances to reduce the power surge and possible damage when power is restored.
• Stay out of flood water as there is a risk of wastewater contamination and unknown hazards.
• If people or property are in danger always call 111. Call 0800 492 452 to report damage.
• If you feel your home is at risk please seek alternative accommodation with friends or family. If you can’t, please contact Waikato District Council on 0800 492 452.

Rain is hitting parts of the region already with scattered heavy showers in some areas. However, the worse is still to come.
MetService Metrologist Georgina Griffiths says Cyclone Cook is tracking as expected.
“The heavy rain and localised downpours that we’re already experiencing across the region are expected to worsen tomorrow.
“Added to the rain (tomorrow), we’ll see severe gales, with gusts of up to 140kmph being forecast as Cyclone Cook passes by the region. This is likely to impact on transport, particularly ferries and at airports,” she says.
Auckland Civil Defence Head of Emergency Management Operations Aaron Davis says Aucklanders should be clearing gutters and drains on their own property and seriously considering timing of holiday weekend travel.
“We strongly advise people to think carefully about their travel plans tomorrow (Thursday). With wild weather expected to hit the Auckland region between midday and 6pm, postponing travel is recommended.

A significant storm event, followed by the arrival of tropical cyclone Cook, is highly likely to bring extreme weather – with significant rainfall and high winds – to the south eastern part of the Auckland region.
Communities in the Kawakawa Bay and Orere Point area, particularly those towards the Waiti Bay end of Kawakawa Bay Coast Road, are expected to again be isolated by road and without power or phone for a substantial amount of time.
Waiti Bay residents ONLY – Consider alternative accommodation
Auckland Civil Defence strongly recommends that residents in the Waiti Bay area look at alternative accommodation for the next few days and potentially for longer.
Should you choose to stay, you may be isolated for some time while power, phone and access is restored. Make sure you are prepared.
General advice
Never attempt to drive over slips and treat power lines as live at all times.
If there is an immediate risk to life or property contact the emergency services on 111.
Check on neighbours and family, especially if they are in at risk areas or might be affected by flooding or slips.
Move away from flooded areas and stay out of floodwaters.
Never try to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters.
If you get stuck in a flood, get out of your car and move to higher ground immediately, taking great care in the floodwaters.
If driving at night, drive slowly, especially through flood-prone areas as you may encounter flooding at short notice.
Insurance: once the storm is over or it is safe to return home, contact your insurance company. If possible, take photos of damage.
Take good care of yourself: recovering from a major storm is a big job. It is tough on both your body and your spirit. Learn how to recognise and care for anxiety, stress and fatigue.
If you can’t live in your house due to flooding, slips, lack of access or extreme damage to you, try and stay with family or friends. If you can’t, Auckland Council may be able to assist, contact us on 0800 22 22 00 for further support.
