• Names of Beaches – Weymouth Beach has no name sign nor does Shallow Water Beach.
• Swimming spots – There are no signs at all to indicate places suitable for swimming..
• Fishing Spots – There are no signs.
• Walking Spots – There are no signs.
• Boating Ramps – the current signs are not very good.
• Points with no access – To minimise trespassing.
What to do about this? Well, the Weymouth Residents and Ratepayers society delegated me to design up Directional Signage for placing at various locations. Now I’m writing this post to bring the lack of signage to your attention and to gauge what you think about our “Signage Project”. Feel free to comment in the comments section.
Signage is ordinarily the responsibility of Auckland Transport. However, in the years I have been living in Weymouth the signage provided by AT has been non-existent or sub-standard. Currently they refuse to help at all.
More importantly, we have the support of the Manurewa Local Board for our project.
Things to note:
1. Our graphics are designed to Best Practice of the Day and our symbolism is consistent with national and international usage, albeit with local flair and a view to the artistic merit of the designs. I have copies of the NZTA approved standards and have deviated from these a little in order to contribute character and flair to Weymouth. After all, who wants Weymouth to be boring?!
2. The location points on the map provided for the proposed sign placement are agreed as being ideal for wayfinding signage. Even AT approves of these.
3. Seven of the proposed locations for signage are on Council land and the Manurewa Local Board is likely to assist in their placement. The others we have to negotiate on a case by case with local property owners and we are yet to do this. It’s hard to get the procedural order exactly right when you start from nothing to create something and there is no model to 0ollow.
Signage plays a critical role in place shaping and the proposed project is about exactly that - place-shaping Weymouth. Weymouth R&R want Weymouth to be a clean, bright, enjoyable village and they are doing their utmost to bring this about. We feel this project will enhance the amenity value of Weymouth/Manurewa and enhance its beautification and reputation. We also think that this project carries the potential to raise the village profile positively.
