Australia is still the most common country of birth for people born outside New Zealand to gain citizenship, according to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

Brian from New Lynn

Figures released show that just over 8000 Australians became New Zealand citizens in 2019, either because they had a parent who is a citizen or they migrated to New Zealand. The United Kingdom comes second, with 6050 new Kiwis, followed by India, with over 4600 people. The United Kingdom comes second, with 6050 new Kiwis, followed by India, with over 4600 people. DIA General Manager (Services and Access) Jeff Montgomery said that there are various ways people can become citizens, apart from those born in New Zealand.
“People can become citizens ‘by descent,’ which means they have a parent who was born in New Zealand or ‘by grant,’ when they migrate to New Zealand and apply for citizenship. In 2019, we gained 44,413 new foreign-born Kiwis, 13,383 by descent and 31,030 by grant. We also welcomed 60,000 people who were born here,” he said.
Mr Montgomery said that the number of people gaining citizenship by grant has been declining over the past few years. In 2018, the number of people gaining citizenship by grant was 35,737 people, down from 36,450 people in 2017.
Online applications
================
The key trend in 2020 will be people applying for citizenship online. Mr Montgomery said the Department launched its online application service in October 2019, with restricted availability. “We look forward to extending it to most other people soon. Since launching this service, more than 1600 people have applied. Online applications are the way of the future as they make things very easy for those applying. “Regardless of how people become citizens, they can check their eligibility online from anywhere in the world,” he said.

The noise pollution from this can be very annoying, especially on days like Christmas Day when we should be able to expect a bit of peace and quiet. It's almost become like living near an airport. Sometimes it flies over 10 or more times in one day including up to 3.30 am or later. I don't remember any consultation over this new flight path and the resulting effect on our property values!

Hi neighbours. Auckland Transport has revealed some of its plans to "maximise the use of available space" on Great North Rd in Grey Lynn in attempt to stop car transporters loading and offloading vehicles on the roadside and flush median.
There are at least 15 car yards on Great North Rd, most of which don't have loading facilities on their properties.
Pedestrians have reported ramps being lowered on the road, cars being reversing into oncoming traffic, cyclists struggling to navigate around them and a transporter parked completely over the top of a pedestrian island.
The plans included incorporating loading zones for vehicles including car transporters, removing the flush median and installing speed tables (like elongated speed bumps) to manage speed.
Do you think this is an effective fix? Let us know in the comments.

Auckland, your feedback is in regarding the Representation Commission's proposed electorate changes to help deal with overpopulation prior to this year's election.

Changes to the Manukau East electorate received the majority of the objections, with 64. Objectors were concerned the new boundary would separate Panmure from Mt Wellington.

Fifty-eight people said the name Helensville would not represent the communities within the electorate, instead suggesting Atuanui, Mahurangi and Kaipara, or keeping the name Rodney.

Hibiscus Coast was put forward as an alternative name by many of the 21 Whangaparāoa objectors.

Boundary changes to Papakura were mostly supported by 22 people, while 22 objectors to the new Flat Bush electorate suggested adding areas from Botany and Manurewa and calling it Takanini, Flat Bush-Takanini, Manukau South, Manurewa East, Totara or Totara Park.

What do you think about the changes proposed for your electorate?
