A company which dumped scrap metal in South Auckland without resource consent has been ordered by Auckland Council to clean up its act.

Compliance officers have issued two abatement notices stopping the firm from importing the material to 30 Great South Rd Takanini and ordering removal of the metal.

Officers were acting on a complaint made at the end of April that a large pile of scrap had been dumped.

The land was being leased and the scrap stored there temporarily, while the company cleaned its main site in Onehunga.

Auckland Council’s GM Licensing and Regulatory Services James Hassall said the company had until June 10 to comply with the abatement notices.

“If they fail to comply, the council would consider taking further action including prosecution under the Resource Management Act, which carries a maximum penalty of $600,000 for a company,” he said.

Residents who see dumped rubbish are urged to call 0800 NO DUMP (0800 66 3867) or email inthebin@aklc.govt.nz

Tēnā koutou. The Sky Bus North Harbour Express, north Aucklanders’ only direct link to the airport, is yet to resume more than a year after the service was suspended due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The 55-minute service, which stops outside Albany Westfield and the Smales Farm and Akoranga bus stations along the Northern Busway, cost $25 and $46 for adult one-way and return tickets respectively, with discounted fares for seniors and families.

North Auckland residents have still been able to get to the airport on public transport, via the NX1 to Britomart, train to Papatoetoe Station and the Airport Link bus to the airport.

However, the trip requires two transfers and takes about an hour and 50 minutes from Albany for $7.20 and two hours from the Hibiscus Coast Bus Station for $8.28 – double the time it would take on the Sky Bus service.

Alternatively, north Aucklanders can take the NX1 into the city – $6.12 from the Hibiscus Coast and $4.86 from Albany – and catch the Sky Bus Auckland City Express, taking between an hour and five minutes and an hour and a half.

A Sky Bus spokesman said it is keen to bring the service back, however it would need to see a "significant lift" in patronage for its Auckland City Express. The service resumed in July, however patronage is down 80 per cent compared to pre-Covid.

An initiative to restore and protect Papakura stream is being rolled out by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand and Mondelez New Zealand.

The Papakura Stream Restoration Project will be launched at Brookby Wildlife Habitat on May 26.

The project will kick off with the planting of 12,500 trees and the installation of nearly 400 metres of Future Post fencing, made from recycled soft plastics.

The project aims to boost conservation and teach people about recyling soft plastics.

The initiative will restore and protect five kilometres of the waterway over the next three years and habitat for such native species as the longfin eel, tui and the long-tailed bat.

Most of the stream's original habitat has been lost to agriculture, industry and urban development due to wetland draining.

This has led to a massive reduction in forest cover and water quality, reducing habitats for native species and increasing pollution of the waterway.

This will help to improve the safety of all road users, particularly people crossing the street, accessing the bus stops and walking to the local shops and to Willow Park School.

Consultation is now open until Friday 27 May.
Have your say online here:
at.govt.nz...
Or leave comments below and I will pass them on to AT.

The proposed changes include:
* Upgrade the existing zebra crossing outside of the Watercare Reservoir on Pupuke Road with a raised zebra crossing. This will include installing new footpaths to join the edge of the crossing with the footpath and upgrades to the traffic islands to create a safe space for pedestrians to wait in the centre of the crossing.
* Relocate the existing bus stop on the northern side of Pupuke Road (outside of #94), to the northern kerb outside of the Watercare Reservoir.
* Paint bus stop markings to signal the existing bus stop west of Lydia Avenue, on the southern side of Pupuke Road. This includes painting broken yellow line (no stopping at all times) restrictions extending 9 metres on either side of the bus stop, to allow for the bus to safely pull out of the bus stop and back on to the road. This will result in the loss of three parking spaces.
* Construct new footpaths and kerbs at the intersection of Lydia Avenue and Pupuke Road, to create a safer intersection with improved visibility. These footpaths will also be fitted with tactile pavers, and a metal plate outside of the shops will join this new footpath with the existing footpath, while still allowing for stormwater drainage.
* Install tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
* Paint four dedicated parking spaces outside of the local shops at the corner of Lydia Avenue.
* Install new signage and road markings to reflect these changes.
